Okta supports multiple profile sources, allowing a user profile to originate from various applications or directories. When a user is assigned to multiple profile sources, Okta determines the active profile source based on the configured profile source priority.

What is the effect of profile source priority on user profiles?

A Profile Source is an application or directory integration that acts as a source of truth for the Okta user profile.

• A user may only have one profile source. That means a user may be sourced by a single application or directory at a time, regardless of how many profile source applications are assigned to the user.
• Apart from the user's profile source, a user's attributes may be sourced by an application or directory other than the Okta user's profile source. User attributes may also be sourced by Okta. This is known as attribute-level sourcing.
• When multiple profile sources apply to a user, the profile source priority determines which profile source is active.

Okta Provides a Method to View and Modify the Profile Source Priority

Navigate to the Profile Sources page in the Admin Console and use the provided arrows to adjust the priority order.

1. In the Okta Admin Console, navigate to Directories > Profile Sources.
2. Change the source priority using the arrows on the right side.

NOTE: Use caution when changing profile source priority because Okta reevaluates all user profiles against the updated sourcing rules and overwrites existing attribute data in bulk.
