Salesforce Community Integration Error "You're creating a duplicate record. We recommend you use an existing record instead"

Okta Classic Engine
Okta Identity Engine
Okta Integration Network

Overview

The following error is encountered when provisioning Salesforce Community Integration:

Automatic provisioning of user ***** to app Salesforce.com failed: You're creating a duplicate record. We recommend you use an existing record instead.

Applies To

  • Salesforce Community
  • Okta Integration Network (OIN)
  • Provisioning

Cause

Currently, the Salesforce integration only supports the Salesforce User object. Contacts, Accounts, and Opportunity objects are not supported.

This means, that when trying to provision these users to Salesforce, Okta cannot see that the users already have a matching Contact record. So, Okta tries to create a new user but then gets stopped by a rule on the Salesforce side that prevents duplicate contacts from being created.

Solution

  1. Disable the duplicate rule on the call on the Salesforce end, the creation of the user will go through, but it will create a duplicate contact.
  2. Contact Salesforce support to create a "merge" rule for the duplicate contacts.
