Proactively Register Login Credentials With the Okta Browser Plugin
Last Updated:
Overview
The Okta Browser Plugin credential-saving feature only functions when a user enters a username and password on the sign-in page of a Secure Web Authentication (SWA) compatible application. While the standard flow does not support proactive registration, the Self-Service Personal Apps feature allows users to actively add applications at a chosen time. Users often seek to proactively register login credentials for a site before accessing the site.
Applies To
- Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
- Okta Browser Plugin
- Secure Web Authentication (SWA)
Solution
How does a user proactively register login credentials using the Okta Browser Plugin?
Enable the Self-Service Personal Apps feature in the Admin Console and add the application from the End-User Dashboard so Okta saves the credentials.
- Navigate to Applications > Self Service > Settings > User App Requests in the Admin Console and enable Allow users to add personal app integrations.
- Select Add apps on the End-User Dashboard.
- Search the application catalog for the target application and select Add.
- Enter the username and password in the Sign In To App dialog that appears on first launch so Okta can save the credentials.
NOTE: Users can only add sites not in the application catalog via Add a bookmark instead, but bookmarks do not store credentials and only navigate to the URL.
NOTE: The Okta Browser Plugin credential storage and autofill features do not support applications that use federated authentication, such as Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) or OpenID Connect (OIDC).
