Resolve Okta Single Sign-On Errors Caused by Incomplete SAML Attribute Statements

Single Sign-On
Okta Classic Engine

Overview

An incomplete Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) attribute statement causes a Single Sign-On (SSO) error because the SAML assertion fails to close the attribute statement properly. Resolve this error by either adding the missing value to the SAML settings or removing the attribute statement entirely. When an administrator configures a SAML attribute statement without a value, the Service Provider generates an SSO error upon receiving the SAML response. The missing values appear in the Okta attribute SAML settings and the SAML assertion.

Applies To

  • Okta Classic Engine
  • Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
  • Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML)
  • Single Sign-On (SSO)
  • App Integration Wizard

Cause

The OASIS SAML specifications permit configurations without values, and Okta implements this schema by design. The specific schema appears as follows:

<complexType name="AttributeType">
    <sequence>
        <element ref="saml:AttributeValue" minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded"/>
    </sequence>
</complexType>

Solution

What resolves Single Sign-On errors caused by incomplete SAML attribute statements?

Resolve the Single Sign-On error by evaluating the Service Provider requirements and either adding the missing value or removing the attribute statement from the Okta settings.

  • If the Service Provider anticipates a value for the specific SAML attribute statement, include a value within the SAML settings.
  • If the Service Provider does not expect to receive the specific attribute statement, remove the statement from the SAML settings.
