Okta Verify Auto-Updates Despite Disable Updates Setting Being Enabled

Devices and Mobility
Okta Identity Engine

Overview

Okta Verify automatically updates to the next version even when the Disable updates option remains active in the Okta Verify release controls. This occurs because Okta Verify versions prior to 6.9 require a specific registry key to disable automatic updates. Adding a DWORD registry key set to 1 resolves the issue for older versions.

Applies To

  • Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
  • Okta Verify

Cause

Okta Verify versions below 6.9 do not natively enforce the Disable updates release control setting without a specific registry modification.

Solution

How is the Okta Verify auto-update issue resolved?

Prevent Okta Verify versions prior to 6.9 from automatically updating by adding a specific registry key and verifying the release control settings in the Okta Admin Console.

  1. Add a DWORD value for EnableReleaseControls to the registry keys and set the value to 1.

EnableReleaseControls

NOTE: Okta Verify version 6.9 and later no longer requires these registry flags. The release control settings function by default.

  1. In the Okta Admin Console, go to Security > Authenticators > Okta Verify release controls.
  2. Ensure the Automatic updates option under Release controls is set to Disable updates.
