Okta System Log Displays VERIFICATION_ERROR Due to Incorrect Username

Overview

When a user enters a typo in the username during a login attempt, Okta generates a verification error in the System Log. Ensure the correct username is entered during the sign-in process to resolve this issue. When attempting to sign in to Okta and Office 365, a user receives the following errors:

 

Can't sign in

 

Account not found

 

Additionally, the Okta System Log displays the following error:

 

FAILURE: VERIFICATION_ERROR

Cause

The user entered an incorrect username during the login attempt. This typo causes Okta to fail the verification process, generating the error in the System Log.

Solution

How is the verification error resolved?

Review the System Log in the Okta Admin Console to identify the incorrect username and instruct the user to sign in with the correct credentials.

  1. In the Okta Admin Console, navigate to ReportsSystem Log to review the verification error event.
    • In the System Log, verify the issue by expanding the event and checking the DisplayName and ID. An unknown value means the user does not exist.

  1. Identify the incorrect username attempted during the failed login.
  2. Instruct the user to sign in again using the exact, correctly spelled username associated with the Okta account.
