Okta Admin Console Search Bar Disappears Upon Clicking
Last Updated:
Overview
A corrupted entry in the browser local storage causes the Okta Admin Console search bar to disappear when an administrator clicks it. Clear the corrupted key from the browser local storage or clear the browser cache to resolve the issue. When an administrator logs into the Okta Admin Console and clicks on the global search bar at the top of the page, the search bar immediately disappears, preventing any text entry or search actions. If the administrator refreshes the browser or navigates to a new page within the Admin Console, the search bar reappears, but clicking on it again causes it to disappear once more.
Applies To
- Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
- Okta Classic Engine
- Okta Admin Console
- Global Search
- Google Chrome (and other Chromium-based browsers)
Cause
A corrupted or malformed entry stored in the browser local storage, specifically related to the recent search feature, causes this behavior. The corrupted data payload crashes the user interface rendering of the search bar whenever an administrator clicks it. Okta deployed a permanent backend code fix to prevent this corruption from occurring in future sessions. However, administrators who interacted with the search bar before this release may still retain the corrupted data in the browser local cache. Because the backend fix does not automatically clear pre-existing local storage, the issue persists until the administrator manually clears the stale data.
Solution
What steps clear the corrupted local storage key?
Open the browser developer tools, locate the recent search results key in the local storage section, and delete it to restore search bar functionality.
- Open the Okta Admin Console in the browser.
- Open the browser Developer Tools (Right-click anywhere on the page and select Inspect, or press F12).
- Navigate to the Application tab.
- In the left-hand sidebar, under the Storage section, expand Local storage.
- Select the Okta Tenant URL (for example,
https://<tenant>-admin.okta.com). - In the right-hand pane, locate the key named
recentSearchResults. - Right-click the
recentSearchResultskey and select Delete. - Refresh the browser page.
Clear the browser cache as an alternative solution.
Update the browser to the latest version and clear all cached data to resolve the issue without using developer tools.
- Update the browser to the latest version.
- Clear the browser cache, cookies, and temporary site data, ensuring the time range is set to All time.
