Okta Access Gateway NGINX Service Error Occurs Due To Duplicate HTTP2 Directive
Last Updated:
Overview
An Okta Access Gateway (OAG) NGINX service error occurs because the http2 on directive in the REST Monitoring configuration file is a duplicate. When starting or reloading the NGINX service, the following error appears:
nginx: [emerg] "http2" directive is duplicate in /etc/nginx/conf/icsgw_server_common_variables.conf:26
nginx: configuration file /opt/oag/nginx/conf/nginx.conf test failed
Resolve this issue by disabling REST monitoring via the SSH menu or contacting Okta Support for a permanent fix.
Applies To
- Okta Access Gateway (OAG)
- Upgrades from version 2025.8 to 2026.x
Cause
The http2 on directive in the REST Monitoring configuration file is a duplicate because it also exists in a common variables configuration file. This affects systems that have REST Monitoring enabled and upgraded from version 2025.8 to 2026.x.
Solution
How is the duplicate HTTP2 directive error resolved?
Disable REST monitoring through the SSH menu and restart the NGINX service to temporarily resolve the error.
- Navigate to 4-Monitoring, select 5-Configure REST APIs, and choose 1-Disable REST APIs.
NOTE: While disabled, the monitoring endpoint (by default/basic_status) no longer returns results, which may impact active health checking if this is monitored. - If the message okta-nginx.service is not active, cannot reload. appears when disabling the REST API, restart the NGINX service. This message occurs if the NGINX service attempts and fails to start too many times.
- Navigate to 2-Services, select 1-NGINX, and choose 3-Restart NGINX.
