New Device Detected and Behavior Detection Troubleshooting

Administration
Okta Classic Engine
Okta Identity Engine

Overview

This documentation explains the new device event that is shown in the system logs whenever a user logs in.

Applies To

  • Behavior Detection
  • Device Biometrics

Cause

This usually happens due to behavior detection, where some users' devices may be treated as 'New' devices, although they are the same devices they use to log in. This could be caused by browser settings or any IT-managed tools that clear browsers data on exit, meaning whenever an end-user closes the browser, it clears all the data (cache, cookies, history, etc.) so the next time the end-user logs in, a 'new device' is detected in the System Log.

Solution

  1. Check the RawUserAgent, Client IP, and anything that is triggered as 'New'.
  2. Based on the above, try using another browser that may not be managed by the IT department.
  3. If the issue persists, please review the Behavior Detection documentation.
  4. Open an Okta Support case if the behavior still does not match expectations.
