Overview

Okta introduced Bring Your Own Telephony (BYOT). In some deployment scenarios, multiple SMS Factor attempts are logged as a SUCCESS in the syslog messages (see the example below).

System Logs Event

The user is getting duplicate SMS notifications from Okta and the configured SMS provider. This article can be used to compare the Telephony vendor used and establish whether it is Okta's Telephony Provider (TeleSign or Twilio) or the BYOT used in the Telephony Inline Hook.

Applies To
  • Okta Workflows for an external telephony provider
  • SMS Factor
  • Bring Your Own Telephony (BYOT)
Cause

If the Okta Workflows for an external telephony provider is not configured correctly, Okta will failover to the default Okta SMS Provider and this may result in two SMS Factor Messages logged for each user attempt. A closer inspection of the events shows one transaction per Telephony Provider.

Solution

Ensure that the Okta Workflows for an external telephony provider is correctly configured as per the Okta Workflows for an external telephony provider documentation. If the workflow is correctly configured, a single SUCCESS event is logged for the Telephony solution.
