iOS User Is Registered with Okta FastPass and Silent Probing Does Not Work
Devices and Mobility
Okta Identity Engine
Overview

Okta Verify FastPass authentication is not working on registered iOS devices.

When users sign in to an application with FastPass enabled in iOS, they are prompted to enter their username and password.

Applies To
  • Okta Verify FastPass for iOS
  • Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
Solution

iOS does not perform Silent Probing when the device is not managed. The iOS device has to be managed with an SSO extension profile for which the Okta FastPass can dynamically generate headers and signs. For further information, please refer to Configure an SSO extension on iOS devices

To support multiple platforms and provide a consistent user experience, Okta FastPass uses numerous ways to perform authentication, known as probing schemes on various platforms.

There are two broad categories of probing schemes:

  1. Silent Probing, where the Okta Sign-In Widget automatically checks if the FastPass is configured on the device and can be used to authenticate the user.
  2. Interactive Probing occurs when Silent Probing is unsuccessful. With Interactive Probing, users would require interaction to launch Okta Verify and complete FastPass authentication. During Interactive Probing, the browser may offer a prompt for the user to Sign in with Okta Verify or provide a page with Open Okta Verify, and the Okta Sign-In Widget also provides a Launch Okta Verify button:
