Impact of Profile Updates on Okta Group Rules

Okta Classic Engine
Okta Identity Engine
Lifecycle Management

Overview

When a user profile changes due to a lifecycle event, Okta automatically re-evaluates group rule conditions. Based on this evaluation, Okta adds, removes, or retains the user in the corresponding groups.

Applies To

  • Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
  • Okta Classic Engine
  • Lifecycle Management
  • User Profiles
  • Group Rules

Solution

How do user lifecycle events impact group rule evaluations?

When a user profile is updated during a lifecycle event, Okta automatically re-evaluates the user against active group rules and performs specific actions based on the evaluation results.

  • If the user continues to meet the rule conditions, Okta retains the user in the group.
  • If the user no longer meets the rule conditions, Okta automatically removes the user from the group.
  • If the user newly meets the rule conditions, Okta automatically adds the user to the group.
