This article describes how to unmerge users imported from a profile source and matched to an existing user.

The most common cause is when a user is imported from a profile source and incorrectly matched to a user with the same or a similar name in the Provisioning: To Okta settings. When users share the same First and Last name, and there are multiple profile sources, it is possible for users to be incorrectly matched and confirmed. To avoid this issue, ensure that only exact matches are automatically confirmed.
For example, John Robert Smith and John Clayton Smith have the same first and last names. If Allow Partial Matches: Partial match on first and last name is enabled in the Provisioning: To Okta settings of the profile source, then it is possible for these users to be imported and matched together if they have separate profile sources. If the match is confirmed automatically or by mistake, the original user must be disconnected from the second profile source, and the new user will need to be reimported.
If a user is incorrectly matched, unmerge the profiles by deleting the application assignment from the profile source that incorrectly matched the profiles by following these steps:
- Navigate to the profile source's Assignment tab and click X beside their name.
- Ensure that the users will not be matched and confirmed automatically.
If the user was manually matched and confirmed by mistake, proceed to the next step. If the user was automatically matched and confirmed, Partial Matching must be turned off before reimporting the new user. To turn off Partial Matching, navigate to the Provisioning: To Okta settings and turn off Auto-confirm partial matches.
- Perform an Import from the Profile Source.
Navigate to the Import tab of the Profile Source and perform an Import. - Confirm the user as a new user.
Ensure that the user is not matched to an existing user, and a new Okta user is created.
The end result will be 2 users: the original user and a new user from the second profile source.
