Updating a user email address in an Okta organization requires modifying the user profile directly in the Admin Console. If the email attribute is sourced from an external application, the update must occur in the external system acting as the source of truth.

How is a user email address updated in Okta?
Update a user email address directly within the Okta Admin Console by navigating to the user profile and modifying the email field.
- Log in to the Admin Console.
- Navigate to Directory > People.
- Select the user.
- Choose the Profile tab.
- Update the email address and select Save.
NOTE: When utilizing the application to Okta attribute mappings for email, update the email in the system where the email is the source of truth.
How is the source of truth confirmed for an email attribute?
Administrators can navigate to the email attribute configured for the Okta user profile and confirm the source of truth.
Review the email attribute configuration to confirm the source of truth, as demonstrated in the following example where Active Directory (AD) is the primary source.
Once the source is confirmed, locate the attribute source in the Profile Editor and choose the appropriate user profile mappings.
- Navigate to Directory > Profile Editor.
- Search for the source of the attribute.
- Select the Mappings dropdown menu to choose the appropriate User Profile mappings.
Select the appropriate Application to Okta tab and review the email attribute. Preview a user to see the data passed into Okta from the attribute's source.
