Okta Dashboard Fails to Render in Edge Legacy IE Mode for Applications Requiring Legacy Browser Access
Last Updated:
Overview
After Okta release 2023.07.0.17+, the Okta Dashboard fails to render in Microsoft Edge browser windows opened in Legacy/Internet Explorer (IE) compatibility mode. This occurs because required library updates for the Okta service are incompatible with legacy browsers. Users can regain access to legacy applications by manually opening the application in Legacy mode, configuring the Edge browser to open the application in Legacy mode, or controlling the Legacy mode behavior through a Group Policy Object (GPO).
Applies To
- Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
- Okta Classic Engine
- Legacy Applications
- Internet Explorer (IE)
- Microsoft Edge
Cause
Current and future Okta releases are incompatible with the requirements of Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge in Legacy/IE compatibility mode. Okta implemented required updates to libraries in anticipation of further modernization improvements to the Okta service, and these updates are incompatible with legacy browsers.
Solution
NOTE: Okta cannot guarantee the following configurations will continue to work, and they may stop working at any time as Okta continues to implement improvements and bug fixes.
How can an end user open the application manually in Legacy mode?
Adjust the default browser settings in Microsoft Edge to allow Internet Explorer compatibility mode and open the application link in a new tab.
- From the Edge browser, select the three-dot menu and open the Settings page.
- Navigate to the Default Browser tab on the left side.
- Set the Internet Explorer compatibility mode from Default to Allow.
- Reload Edge.
- Open the Okta Dashboard in a regular Edge browser window.
- Right-click the tile for the application that needs to open in IE mode and select Open link in new Internet Explorer mode tab.
The following image displays the option to open a link in a new Internet Explorer mode tab from the Okta Dashboard.
How can an end user modify the default browser settings to allow sites to be reloaded in IE mode?
Modify the default browser settings in Microsoft Edge to allow sites to reload in Internet Explorer mode and add the application landing page URL to the list.
- From the Edge browser, select the three-dot menu and open the Settings page.
- Navigate to the Default Browser tab on the left side.
- Set the Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode (IE mode) from Default to Allow.
- Select Add to the right of Internet Explorer mode pages and enter the URL for the application landing page into the list.
The following image displays the Internet Explorer mode pages section where the application URL is added.
- Reload Edge. The application page opens in IE mode automatically when the user selects the tile from the Okta Dashboard.
How can an Administrator configure legacy mode behavior if it is controlled through a Group Policy Object?
Configure a Group Policy Object (GPO) with the settings from the previous section and push the configuration to all users who require access to the affected application.
