Device ID Persistence in Okta Universal Directory When Device Is Reimaged or Reset
Devices and Mobility
Okta Identity Engine
Overview

This article reviews expectations for how Device IDs are reflected in the Okta Universal Directory after a device is reset, the Operating System (OS) is reimaged/rebuilt, or reinstalled.

Applies To
  • Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
  • Okta Verify Mobile
  • iOS
Solution

On mobile devices, if a factory reset is performed or the device Operating System is reimaged/reinstalled and restored to its factory settings, all user data is deleted from the device, including the Okta Device ID (UD Device/Device ID).

If a user then re-enrolls in Okta Verify after the factory reset/OS Reinstall, a new Device ID is created for the device. Okta Verify does not recover the original Okta device ID.

Once an Okta Verify registration occurs on the newly installed/reset OS, the Devices page (Directory > Devices) will display two device records for the same device, each with its own device ID. Please delete the duplicate device record.
