Okta Custom URL Issuer Mode Options for Custom Authorization Servers

Overview

The purpose of this article is to clarify the issuer mode options for a custom authorization server when one or multiple custom domains are configured.

Cause

Setting up more than 1 custom domain.

Solution

If a single custom domain is set up on Okta, then the authorization server setting under Security > API > Authorization Servers > Settings will display the following options:

  • Dynamic (based on request domain)
  • Okta URL
  • Custom URL

If there is more than one custom domain set up on Okta, then the following options will be displayed:

  • Dynamic (based on request domain)
  • Okta URL
  • Custom URL (essentially dynamic)

NOTE: The third option Custom URL (essentially dynamic) will allow the "issuer" to be any of the custom domains (only custom domains).
