Overview
Create and configure custom attributes in Okta for an application that does not support Schema Discovery for System for Cross-domain Identity Management (SCIM) provisioning. Add the attribute manually in the Profile Editor by defining the data type, display name, variable name, external name, and external namespace.

What are the steps to create a custom application attribute without Schema Discovery?
Create a custom application attribute for an application that does not support Schema Discovery by navigating to the Profile Editor, selecting the application profile, and defining the required attribute fields.
- Navigate to Directory > Profile Editor in the Okta Admin Console.
- Locate the application profile by searching for the application name.
- Select the name of the profile and select Add Attribute.

- Enter the required information in the attribute creation window.

Define the main attribute fields in the creation window.
Define the custom attribute by completing the following main attribute fields in the creation window.
- Data type: Represents the type of data this attribute holds on the application end.
- Display name: The desired name that the attribute displays in Okta on the application attribute profile.
- Variable name: The desired variable name that the attribute uses in Okta on the application attribute profile.
- External name: The variable name from the external application.
- External namespace: The namespace from the external application.
NOTE: Obtain the External name and External namespace from the external application. Contact the external application provider if these values are unknown.
Applications that support Schema Discovery use a different process.
For applications that support Schema Discovery, selecting the Add Attribute button opens a list of attributes that administrators can add to the profile by selecting and saving them. Review the Related References section for more details on Schema Discovery.
