Administration
Overview

This article clarifies whether logging in to an account from another device or browser automatically terminates an active session on another device, and whether Okta offers an out-of-the-box solution for this.

Applies To
  • Single Sign-On (SSO)
  • Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
Solution

Okta does not offer an out-of-the-box solution for this. It does not have a native toggle or built-in policy to automatically log a user out of an existing session when they authenticate from a new device or browser.

By default, Okta permits concurrent sessions. If a user logs in on a desktop browser and then authenticates on a mobile device or a different browser, both sessions remain active. They will expire only based on the idle timeout and maximum session lifetime configurations defined in Okta Sign-On Policies, or if the user explicitly triggers a Single Logout (SLO).
