This article presents a feature that enables Factor Sequencing (or Authenticator Sequencing) on Okta Identity Engine (OIE).

• Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
• Authenticator Sequencing (formerly known as Factor Sequencing in Okta Classic Engine)
• Authentication method chain
• Okta Identity Engine (OIE)

This can be configured by:

1. Navigate to Security > Authentication Policies.
2. Select the desired application (for example, Okta Dashboard) and then select the Rule.
3. Under Actions, select Edit.
4. Under THEN Access is, select Authentication method chain from the dropdown list.

What is the Authentication Method Chain? 

• This feature allows admins to create a specific sequence of authenticator methods a user must complete before accessing an app.
• Bolster application security and mitigate the risk of account compromise by implementing a layered approach to authentication.

How does the Authentication Method Chain work?

The Authentication Method Chain gives three options to create the authentication policy rule. 

• Allows the user to select between multiple factors. 

• Set the sequence of factors the user is challenged by.

• Set multiple authentication flows.
