This article clarifies the administrative capabilities for managing tabs and items on the Okta End User Dashboard. Administrators may inquire about the ability to enforce strict or granular control, such as preventing end users from managing tabs, defining specific options for user tab and item management, or configuring mixed environments of managed and custom tabs for specific groups.

Okta End User Dashboard
Currently, the ability to enforce granular administrative control over tabs and items, such as locking specific tabs while allowing others or preventing end-user modification for specific groups, is a feature request.
While administrators can configure and push dashboard layouts to users, the following specific granular controls are not currently available:
-
Strict Tab Locking: Preventing end users from renaming, deleting, or reordering managed tabs while simultaneously allowing them to manage their own custom tabs.
-
Group-Based Layout Restrictions: Defining specific "read-only" or "managed-only" dashboard experiences for specific groups of users (beyond the standard dashboard push).
-
Mixed Management Mode: Allowing administrators to add managed tabs that are permanently ordered before or after user-customized tabs without the user being able to modify them.
The following capabilities are currently available:
-
Default Dashboard: Administrators can define a dashboard layout that applies to new users or overwrites the dashboard for all users.
-
User Management: By default, end users can manage their own tabs and items if an administrator does not enforce a layout.

Workaround
Organizations that require strict or highly customized dashboard logic may consider implementing a custom dashboard using Okta APIs and SDKs.
