Add Custom Attributes to Applications for Import via CSV File

Overview

Some applications integrated with Okta will not have Provisioning enabled, but will still allow imports from CSV files.

 

This article addresses how to add custom attributes to an application's AppUser Profile, then add those attributes as additional CSV fields for import.

 

NOTE: This article does not cover applications that have Provisioning enabled.

Solution
  1. Add custom attributes to an application.
    1. Navigate to Admin > Directory > Profile Editor.
    2. Find and click the name of the application.
    3. Click Add Attribute.

    1. Fill in the information for the desired attribute.
    2. To add additional attributes, click Save and Add Another, then repeat step d. Otherwise, skip to step f.
    3. Click Save.

  1. Map custom attributes to the Okta User Profile.
    1. While in Profile Editor, click Mappings.
    2. Map the custom attributes to the Okta User profile.

After the additional custom attributes are added to the application's AppUser Profile and mapped to the Okta user profile, a CSV template can be downloaded and populated.

  1. Download and populate the CSV template.
    1. Navigate to Admin > Applications > Applications > select the application > Import.
    2. Click Import from CSV.

    1. Open the template CSV file and populate it with the desired information.

  1. Import users via CSV.
    1. Navigate to Admin > Applications > Applications > select the application > Import.
    2. Click Import from CSV.
    3. Upload the completed file.
    4. Click Import Now.

  1. Create or confirm users.

The uploaded CSV will be parsed and results will be displayed on the Import page. Okta will attempt to match existing users to imported users and will show any exact matches. Users with no matching criteria will be shown as "NEW Okta User".

    1. Use the checkbox to the right of each row to select the user for import into Okta Universal Directory.
      • Any imported user row that is not checked will remain on the Import Results page, and an Okta user profile will not be created.
    2. When finished, click Confirm Assignments.
