Group Assignment to an Admin Role Fails in Okta

Administration
Okta Identity Engine

Overview

When an administrator attempts to assign a group to an Admin Role in the Okta Admin Console, the assignment fails and the following error message appears:

Something went wrong, please refresh to try again.

Group admin error

Applies To

  • Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
  • Okta Classic Engine
  • Admin Roles
  • Groups

Cause

Assigning a group to an Admin Role can fail for two reasons. A group with 5000 or more users exceeds the group member count limit enforced by Okta for Admin Role assignment, so Okta blocks the assignment. A group that is a target of a group rule has its membership managed by that rule, so Okta blocks the assignment of the Admin Role to the group.

Solution

How is the group assignment error resolved?

Assign the Admin Role only to a group that meets both of the following conditions:

  • The group contains fewer than 5000 users.
  • The group is not a target of a group rule.

Is there a workaround for this issue?

There is currently no workaround for this issue.
