Due to unresolvable issues with an application, it may be necessary to move users from one instance of the application on Okta to another.
To successfully transition users from one application to another, the following steps should be taken:
-
First, ensure that the new application is fully functional and has the same characteristics as the old application. Pay attention to the SSO configuration, as certificates and entity IDs can differ between applications, requiring new configurations on both the application and Okta sides.
-
Next, examine the users and their attributes, beginning with the username, and ensure that it matches what is on the application side. Make sure that the required and custom attributes from Okta are matched on the application side by referring to the How to Map an Attribute From Okta to an Application article.
-
Then, assign a small group of users to the new application, either as a group or individually, while being mindful of the attributes, and thoroughly test the new application.
-
After verifying the functionality, continue to assign users to the new application, preferably in small groups, to address any issues that may arise until all users are assigned and their functionality is proven.
-
Next, unassign users from the old application, but only after disabling any provisioning features that the application may have.
- Finally, delete the old application.
NOTE: Conducting the application switch outside of working hours is recommended to ensure a smooth process without interruptions.
