How to Obtain the Okta App Embed Link for Microsoft Office 365 Applications that are Marked as Hidden to End-Users
Okta Classic Engine
Okta Integration Network
Overview
Process for obtaining the Okta App Embed link for Microsoft Office 365 Applications marked as hidden to end-users.
Applies To
  • Microsoft Office 365 (O365)
  • Single Sign On
  • App Embed Link
Solution

Scenario

The PowerBI application link is set to hide in their O365 application. An IDP-initiated URL for PowerBI to another internal portal should be added, but since the link is set not to display, the Embed Link does not appear under the app's General settings.

Option 1

  1. In the existing Microsoft Office 365, copy the App Embed Link for any of the existing links that are available. Save this link. It will be used in step 8 below.

  2. Navigate to Applications > Add Application.

  3. Search for Microsoft Office 365 click Add.

  4. Create a new "dummy" O365 application in Okta that can be set to use SWA for SSO rather than WS-Fed. This app does not need to contain any real values or domain information.
  5. Ensure the Power BI checkbox is selected.

  6. Complete the application setup wizard.

  7. Click on the General Tab > locate the Power BI URL > Copy and save the last value in the URL, which should begin with "aln".
  8. Replace the "aln" value at the end of the App Embed Link that was copied in Step 1 above.

  9. For cleanup purposes, delete the new O365 that was just created.

Option 2

  1. In the existing O365 application, navigate to the General tab.

  2. Locate the Display the following links field.

  3. Temporarily enable/check the Power BI checkbox. NOTE: This will display the Power BI application in the end-user dashboard for users currently assigned to the app.

  4. Scroll down to the App Embed Link section.

  5. Copy the app embed link for the Power BI URL.

  6. Navigate back to the Display the following links field.

  7. Disable the Power BI checkbox.

NOTE:

  • The "aln" value is the same for each O365 individual app link available across all Microsoft Office 365 OIN applications that exist in the Org.
Example: The "aln" value displayed in the app embed link for Power BI in O365 app A is the same as the aln*** value tied to the Power BI link in O365 app B, but the aln*** value for Power BI is NOT the same as the aln** value for the Word Online link in O365 app A or B.
