How to Find The Transaction ID in an Event Log - What is it Used For - When and How to Use It
Administration
Okta Identity Engine
Overview
A transaction ID is assigned for individual jobs. By finding and filtering via the transaction ID, find all events associated with specific jobs.
Applies To
  • Okta System Logs

Solution

What is a Transaction ID, and what is it used for?

  • A Transaction ID can be used to identify every event that happens for a single job or transaction.
  • This can broaden the scope of filtering when searching for specific events.
  • Find this in the system logs, under an expanded log, under the Event > System > Transaction > ID.
  • Click or copy and paste the transaction ID and add this to a search query in the system log to find all events associated with this transaction ID.

Example:
Below, an example of a Group Assignment via a Group rule will be used. Let us say that a group of users was unexpectedly assigned to a group. Using a Transaction ID, it is possible to find all users assigned to the group via the Group Rule and also determine which rule triggered the issue.

  1. First, find a user account that was affected. In this example, the account "Hermione Granger" will be used.
  2. Head over to the account in the People tab, and click View logs.

User Account

  1. Select the log that added the user to the group and expand the event.

Event expended

  1. Scroll down and look for the transaction ID (in this example, the transaction ID is eruvjxl02RUIYaFu13l6).

Transaction ID

  1. Copy this transaction ID and paste it into the search field, and search.

System Log search

  1. Based on this, it is possible to see all transactions from this ID and determine the Group rule that triggered the group assignment.
