How to Check If a Custom Attribute Is Being Used in Any Applications

Overview

When attempting to delete an attribute on the Okta user profile or an application profile, the following error might be encountered:

Property attribute-name cannot be deleted. It is used to populate application-variable.attribute.error.

This error will always point to the application/user mapping that is causing the issue, as shown below:

Solution

To resolve this issue, follow the steps or video below. 

  1. Navigate to Okta Admin console > Directory > Profile Editor > Okta/Application Profile that is causing the issue.
  2. Click on Mappings for the Application profile.
  3. Search either on the Application to Okta or Okta to Application profile for any occurrence of the attribute in question.
  4. Unmap the entry.
  5. Click on the Apply updates now button.
