Okta Error "An object with this field already exists in the current organization" When Creating a New User Account
Last Updated:
Overview
Okta generates an error when creating a new user account because the account violates a unique attribute requirement. Resolve the error by using a unique email address or disabling the unique value requirement for the specific attribute. The exact error message appears as follows:
An object with this field already exists in the current organization.
Applies To
- Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
- Okta Classic Engine
- Administration
Cause
Okta requires a unique username. While Okta does not require a unique email address, the email address attribute cannot match the Okta username of another user. Furthermore, a specific attribute might require a unique value for each user. Review the Restriction settings to verify the unique value option status.
Solution
What resolves the duplicate object field error?
Use an email address that does not match the Okta username of another user, or change the Okta username to remove the conflict. Alternatively, disable the unique value requirement for the specific attribute in the Admin Console by navigating to the Profile Editor and adjusting the attribute settings.
- Navigate to the Okta Admin Console.
- Go to Directory and select Profile Editor.
- Select User (default).
- Search for the desired attribute and select the i icon.
- Clear the Value must be unique for each user option in the pop-up window.
NOTE: A feature flag exists that allows Okta to create users with the same email or username. Contact Okta Support for more information if necessary.
