Restoring a Deleted Okta Group or User

Lifecycle Management
Okta Classic Engine
Okta Identity Engine

Overview

Okta permanently removes all associated data and configurations when an administrator deletes a user or group, requiring administrators to manually recreate the deleted entities. Okta does not provide a built-in mechanism or restore point to recover deleted users, groups, or environment statuses. To prevent accidental deletions, administrators utilize Okta security controls such as permission sets, role-based access controls, and multi-factor authentication.

Applies To

Solution

Can a deleted Okta group or user be restored?

When an administrator deletes a user or group from Okta, Okta permanently removes all associated data and configurations. Okta lacks a built-in mechanism to restore a deleted group or user.

If an administrator accidentally deletes a group or user without a backup, the administrator must manually recreate the entity in Okta and reconfigure any associated settings and permissions.

This limitation also applies to the environment status, as Okta does not offer a restore point.
