Okta BambooHR Integration Error "Failure: API key not provided or invalid"
Last Updated:
Overview
When configuring the BambooHR integration in Okta, an API key error occurs during synchronization if the BambooHR API key expires or becomes invalid. Generating a new API key in BambooHR and updating the provisioning credentials in the Okta Admin Console resolves this issue. Administrators encounter the following error during the synchronization process:
Failure: API key not provided or invalid
Applies To
- BambooHR
- Profile Sync
- User Import
- Lifecycle Management
- Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
- Okta Classic Engine
Cause
The BambooHR synchronization fails because the API key generated by BambooHR has expired or become invalid.
Solution
How is the BambooHR "Failure: API key not provided or invalid" error resolved?
Generate a new API key in the BambooHR application, then update the provisioning credentials in the Okta Admin Console to restore the synchronization connection.
- Sign in to BambooHR with an administrator account.
NOTE: BambooHR recommends using a service account to generate the API key rather than individual administrator credentials. - Select Account Settings in the upper-right corner, then select API Keys.
- Select Add a new key or use an existing key from the My API Keys list.
- Copy the generated API key.
- Sign in to the Okta Admin Console.
- Go to Applications and select Applications.
- Search for and select the BambooHR application.
- Navigate to the Provisioning tab and select Integration.
- Select Edit.
- Enter the copied API key and select Save.
