Improving the Remote User Experience with VPN Notifications

Aug 21, 2015 | by Thomas Hill in Security

Original Author: Eric Karlinsky, Sr. Technical Marketing Manager, Okta

Have you ever clicked on an icon on your Okta dashboard only to get an error because the app is behind a VPN and you're not connected? Well, Okta recently added a simple new feature called VPN Notifications, which avoids that scenario. When VPN Notifications are enabled for a specific application, the end user will be reminded that the application requires a VPN connection.

To enable this feature, log into the Okta Admin UI and navigate to the VPN-required application. Click on the application's General tab and scroll down to the new VPN Notification panel. Click Edit to enable it. You can set it up for On-Network or Off-Network users, or both, and you can customize the text, too. Go to the support page for more detailed instructions.

Once enabled, users will be presented with a reminder notification whenever they click on a VPN-required app, like in the screenshot below:

This feature is generally available - if you want it enabled in your org, just contact support.
